How to correctly change a lip piercing?

So I'm very inexperienced with lip rings and such. I got my lip pierced 10 days ago and it seems just about almost healed. I'm gonna change it from a 14g to a 16g. While changing the piercing if I take it out will it close up fast? and will it be easy to push it through and maneuver it? Is there an easy way of doing it? Btw it's a hoop ring.
